Part-1 on Virtue has four sections, as under:

1.1: Introduction (Ch. 1-4)
1.2: Virtue in Domestic Life (Ch. 5-24)
1.3: Virtue in Life of Renunciation (Ch. 25-37)
1.4: Destiny (Ch. 38)

Now we begin with the second section on Domestic Virtue.

While every virtue under the sun is covered in Thiru-kural, careful reading shows that one is missing. This missing virtue is respect for parents. Indian culture even today is distinguished by the respect children have for parents but Thiru-valluvar has not mentioned this in his treatise.

In Christianity & Judaism, the 5th Commandment is 'Honor thy father and mother.' In Islam, 'The Straight Path' enjoins : 'Be kind to your parents'.

While parent's duty to raise their children is mentioned in Chapter-7 and elsewhere, the reverse duty of children towards parents does not find a mention. What could be the reason for this ommision?
