Chapter - 75 : The Fortification
 

Introductory Note

Though not as important in the history of Southern India as in the annals of Sivaji and his Mahrattas, forts of considerable celebrity existed in the Carnatic, and are still to be seen in all stages of dilapidation. The pages of Orme’s narrative abound in illustrations of the importance of these in South India.

Translation(s)

A fort is wealth to those who act against their foes; is wealth to them who, fearing, guard themselves from woes.

Explanation

In other words, for is necessary for both, offensive and defensive wars.

Translation(s)

A fort is that which owns a fountain of crystal clear waters, an open space, a hill, and a shade of beauteous forest near.

Science declares that fort must possess these: Height, Breadth, Strength, Difficult access.

A fort must need but slight defense, yet ample be, defying all the foreman’s energy.

A fort, for those within, must be a good warlike station – impregnable, containing ample stores of food.

A fort, with all munitions amply stored, in time of need should afford good reserves.

A fort should be impregnable to foes that gird it round, or arm their dots from far, or mine beneath the ground.
